James Gerein
Holiday on Mars
December 4 - January 29, 2025
James Gerein snapped his first photo with his mother’s camera 55 years ago and has been photographing in various parts of the world ever since. He manipulates digital images to produce garish, and sometimes arresting phantasmagorical results. These photographs bear little resemblance to the original images, some of which are arguably unremarkable. This transformational process allows him to find beauty in the mundane. He calls what he does ‘AIFUS Photography’ which stands for ‘Abstract Images From Unlikely Sources’. Shadows, reflections, mud, algae, moss, lichen, trees, bark, roots, water, rocks, plants, things in a state of decomposition, and architecture provide the source material which he transforms into what you see. Gerein’s images don’t reflect reality, are wholly artificial, and are more rooted in the imagination than in the real world. He hopes the viewer will approach each photo as a mystery, and discover their subjects and stories for themselves.
