ANTOINETTE HERIVEL: Fragmented Fragmented is a biographical narrative based on letters and a partial diary written by the artist's grandmother describing the wartime experiences of her family under German occupation of the British channel island of Jersey during WWII. The poignant letters describe mundane domestic routines and struggle for survival against the bigger “theatre” of wartime events. The civilian population lived in virtual imprisonment, in a state of hunger, deprivation, oppression and constant threat of personal danger. While the horror of this event was quickly forgotten after the war, the scars and consequences remained. Herivel's large scale investigative drawings in inks, egg tempera and hand written text, represent her grandmother and her domestic world at that time; a story which has many parallels to how women face difficulties during present day hostilities Artist Talk: February 17, 2010 |
