Thread- -Bound Thread- -Bound is an exhibition that considers the act of interlocking threads through stitching, weaving, or suturing within artistic practices. This exhibition features ten artists working in various media that use filament to either make marks, create objects, bind parts or as broader metaphors relating to labour, tradition, domesticity, or confinement. Lumsden artist Martha Cole, for example, has been specializing in fabric and stitchery throughout her career. Through attention to deftly experienced handling of dyed, quilted and stitched fabric, she explores imagery found in nature leading us into a highly spiritual contemplation of human experience. Montreal artist Karen Tam uses cobalt blue thread to stitch images of factory work onto traditional Chinese rice bags in the style of blue and white porcelain ware. She explores notions of work, politics, commodity and representation. The obsessively ridden practice of Regina artist, Christopher Campbell Gardiner, incorporates the act of stitching as systematic and regimented mark making and binding. Gardiner creates darned fabric boxes that house the artist’s fears and anxieties as a gesture of containment and admittance. Also included in the show are artists Sheila Nourse, Leanne Lloyd, Judy McNaughton, June Jacobs (Saskatchewan), Kristina Thornton (Montreal), Cara Sawka (Halifax), and Dale Roberts (Victoria).
